Le festival des '''Rencontres Trans Musicales''' de Rennes a été crée par l'association Terrapin[https://histoires.lestrans.com/edition/1979] en [[1979]], constituée de {{w|Béatrice Macé}}, {{w|Jean-Louis Brossard}}, [https://reveilcreatif.com/herve-bordier/ Hervé Bordier] (qui part en 1996), [[Jean-René Courtès]] (jusqu'en 1990) et d'autres étudiants Rennais passionnés de musique.

La première édition s'est tenue les 14 et 15 juin [[1979]] à la [[Salle de la Cité]]. Ce n'est qu'à partir de la deuxième édition que le festival se tient en fin d'année.

Depuis son origine, {{w|Jean-Louis Brossard}}, pour la partie artistique, et {{w|Béatrice Macé}}, pour tout ce qui concerne la production, co-dirigent les Rencontres Trans Musicales de Rennes.

De très nombreux artistes se sont produits aux Trans Musicales, parmi lesquels {{w|Marquis de Sade (groupe)}}, {{w|Massive Attack}}, {{w|Nirvana}} ou {{w|Cypress Hill}}.
