| Inscription InfoField | Horloge (haut): SHEPHERD PATENTEE // 53 LEADENHALL ST(T) LONDON // GALVANO-MAGNETIC CLOCK
Plaque commémorative (gauche): The Shepherd 24-hour Gate Clock // This is one of the earliest electrically driven public clocks and was installed here in 1852. The dial always shows Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). In summer Britain converts to British Summer Time (BST), which is an hour ahead of GMT, and the clock then appears one hour 'slow'. Being 24-hour clock, the hour hand marks noon (XII) at the bottom of the dial and midnight (0) at the top. The time shown is accurate to 0.5 of a second. // The Time Ball // The red time ball on top of Flamsteed House is one of the world's first visual time signals. It was installed in 1833 (though the present one dates to 1919) to enable navigators on ships on the Thames to check their marine chronometers. The Time Ball drops daily at 1300hrs (GMT in winter, BST in summer). It is raised halfway up the mast at 1255hrs as a preparatory signal and to the top 2 minutes before it drops. Plaque commémorative (partie centrale): Height above Mean Sea Level at Newlyn 154.70 feet.
Plaque commémorative (droite): Ordnance Survey Bench Mark // The small plate (marked 'G 1692') is an Ordnance Survey bench mark. Similar marks appear on walls and buildings across the country. The height of each above sea level has been measured and recorded. Dating from the 1940s, this particular mark is a replacement for an older mark that once existed nearby. // Public Standards of Length // These British Imperial Standards were first mounted outside the Observatory main gates some time before 1866, to enable the public to check measures of length. The stated length is the distance between the inner faces of the two D-shaped studs. Jauge (bas): BRITISH YARD // TWO FEET // ONE FOOT // SIX INCHES // THREE INCHES // TROUGHTON & SIMMS LONDON
Ordnance Survey benchmark: OSBM G1692

Notes
For users of the photo
This image is not in the public domain. Copyright protection applies.
The rules of the listed free license apply, no more and no less. Please respect the copyright protection. Especially with social media you have to pay attention to the terms of use. These sometimes do not correspond to the license conditions listed here. (See CC BY-SA licenses and social media.) Please check this before use in the respective medium. The license conditions must also be respected when using so-called generative artificial intelligence (AI). Images created on the basis of this image are processed images or derivatives within the meaning of the license. Of course, a free license is no carte blanche for use. In particular, there are restrictions not based on the license, for example to the personality rights of the author (Copyright law of Germany, §§ 12 to 14 of the German Copyright Act). This is especially true for the required attribution and the use of the image. It is expressly not allowed to give the impression through the use of the image, that the author supports the work, in which the image is used, or whose rights holders in any way.

For editors
Please do not change image file, license or file name!
Even though a wiki offers many possibilities, some changes are possible, but not allowed. The author of the image has made it available here precisely with the named license. The three components image file, license and file name (title) belong together indispensably. Always keep in mind that images are also used outside the Wikimedia Commons world. There the attribution refers to exactly this place and exactly this image file here.
It should also be noted that the file’s metadata (EXIF/IPTC/XMP) must not be removed or altered (protection of information necessary for the enforcement of rights, § 95c of the German Copyright Act). It should also be noted that the author expressly distance hisself from images based on his photos that have been changed — even minimally — by third parties and where only his name is noted as author.
|
![]() | Please do not overwrite this image with a modified image.
The author would like to make possible minor modifications only at his own source. (The source is usually a RAW file. Processing of the JPEG file results in a loss of quality.) This ensures that the changes and the quality are preserved. In addition, easy access to the source should also be possible for external use, which would not be possible via the file versions. If you think that any changes should be required or if you want to express constructive criticism, please contact the author. Otherwise you can upload a new image with a new name. Please use one of the templates: derivative or extract. Please be sure to include your name, if you upload a derivative or a detail, because you're in charge of the changes. The preparation of derivatives or extracts is not allowed without mentioning your name. Please do not rename this file. The name is part of the required license informations. In the case of misstatements, the author is pleased to provide information.

For photographers
First, you should be aware that a good photo is taken by the photographer themselves. The focus is therefore on composition and creativity. At least when you are starting out, it is advisable to follow the rules of composition. The camera and lens are tools for creating the photo. Technically speaking, a photo is only as good as the tools allow it to be.
If creativity and high quality are important to you, you should say goodbye to fully automatic mode. However, individual automatic functions can be useful. It is better to make some camera settings consciously, so it is also important to use them selectively.
There are only a few basic parameters that affect a photo. These are aperture, exposure time and ISO value. The aperture determines the depth of field in the image. The wider the aperture is open, the less sharp the image will be, and vice versa. However, the aperture should only be closed as far as is absolutely necessary. The exposure time should be short enough to prevent the photo from being blurred. The shorter it is, the more likely it is that movement will be frozen. The ISO value determines how sensitive a sensor is to light. The higher it is, the more sensitive it becomes. (More precisely, the light signal is amplified.) However, this has a disadvantage, because as the ISO value increases, so does the noise.
You should be able to focus correctly on the camera. You don’t necessarily have to focus manually, but you should be able to select the appropriate focus fields yourself. Furthermore, the significance of the focal length and its effect on the photo should be actively selected. For example, a longer focal length results in a compression effect, which has its own image effect. Even when using a zoom lens, it can’t hurt to take a few steps forward or backward.
Of course, this is only a very brief overview. There are other influencing factors and parameters, but these cannot be conveyed in the brevity of this text.Colors, light, perspective, and facial expressions influence our mood: warm colors have a stimulating effect, cool colors a calming one. A familiar face or a specific place can immediately trigger memories and associated emotions.
At the same time, the way we take photos reflects our inner world. The choice of subject and image composition can reveal unconscious themes. This is used in psychotherapy: photos help to express feelings, activate memories, and reflect self-image. Images thus become a bridge between emotion and language.
Maybe you’re waiting for the “perfect” subject. For better light. For more time. But creativity doesn’t start with perfect conditions — it starts with curiosity. With the courage to look. With the decision to get started today.
The light in the morning tells different stories than the light in the evening. Shadows paint patterns on walls. Raindrops transform into tiny universes when viewed in macro. An ordinary street becomes a stage when you observe it patiently.
You don’t need the most expensive equipment. You need your eye. Ask yourself:
- What do I overlook every day?
- How does this moment feel?
- What happens when I get closer — or further away?
Allow yourself to experiment. Play with perspectives. Crouch down. Take pictures against the light. Deliberately crop something out. Break the rules — after you know them. Not every picture has to be perfect. Every picture can be a step.
Creativity comes from doing. So get going. Capture what moves you. Show your view of the world — because no one else sees it the way you do.
Your camera is not a tool for perfection. It is a tool for expression.

You like this photograph? That pleases me very much! You would like to see more of my pictures? With pleasure.
Wikimedia Commons has a large number of my photographs available under a free license. This makes it easy for you and me. The license details are for each picture. The use is easier than you think, because in essence, this is just the attribution in the form I want. In addition, usage notes are listed for each picture. And if it does not fit, just ask.
