Description
Fragmentary Roman relief of three agitated geese in front of an Ionic temple, presumably intended to represent the temple of Juno Moneta on the Capitoline hill in Rome. The relief illustrates the story of the attack on the Capitoline by the Gauls in the early 4th century BCE, which was repulsed when the Roman garrison was warned of the approach of the enemy by the honking and wing-flapping of the sacred geese of Juno (Livy 5.47).
